Pop and rattle

Every time I hit a bump or ditch in the road I get these sounds of popping and rattling in the front of my car. Ball joint?

Can you pinpoint the location or source of sound? Does it sound like fedner area, engine bay, under the car?

Make sure your shocks are tight. If they are not snug enough, they will pop and rattle over bumps.

Def. the suspension. Sometimes I hear a clicking or thunking noise when I turn the wheel.

New shocks were installed about a month ago, and are pretty tight. Had the problem before and after installing the new shocks.

Yeah check them again. After about a couple hundred miles driving they can come loose just like your lug nuts. Don't just shake them with your hand put a socket and ratchet on them and tighten.

If clicking is present you may want to look to your CV axels for the problem. That ia a sign of axels on their way out.

I have tried to tighten them, like I said, I had this problem even before installing the new shocks. I'm thinking it IS the ball joint, in which case I will be replacing the whole lower control arm.

How much more difficult is it to replace an axle?

An axel isnt that bad.. To check for bad components in the suspension...Jack the car up. Making sure to lift the fronts off the ground.... Grab the Wheel/Tire try to see if their is any play.... Grab at the 12 and 6 locations push in and out... Any movement? Then move your hands to the 3 and 9 locations repaet the same steps.. Any movement? If the answer is No to both you B.Joints and Tie rods are going to check out fine... If it is one or the other, Look at b.Joints and Tie Rid ends.

I don't know, but I'm trying to fix it myself and soon. It sounds horrible.

The steps that I provided will also point out a wheel bearing.

OK, so I jacked the 2g up today, I don't have any play up and down but I wiped my finger acrossed my lower ball joint cover and got a nice glob of grease on my finger.

Replacing my axle will replace both the inner and outer CV joints, correct?

the lateral arm ball joints are very hard to check because most of the play is up and down, not side to side

Lift the car up on jack stands and then place your jack cup underneath the lateral arm ball joint. Lift the jack slowly until it touches the bottom of the ball joint and isn't hitting anything else. as you continue to raise the jack watch to see if the ball joint moves up before the rest of the suspension does.

man good luck swapping the axles out on you baby. everyone i know has had to go through hell to get there axles out the hubs. once you get through that though the rest is cake. Unbolt the wheels and rotors and calibors an all that good crap that no one needs on a car and unbolt the spindle so it folds down and put the axle nut on revers to be flush and beat that thing loose then just take a pry bar ot flat head screw driver go under the car to where the axles go in the trans and pry out then pull out. put new ones in to line up splines and hit with a hammer till it locks in and bolt it all up. lol

its most likely the axel. i had the same exact problem in my jetta. When i hit bumps it would make loud popping noises and if i made a sharp turn it would make loud clicking noises.
