American Bulldog

Does anyone here have one?, how would you rate the breed? I'm seriously considering buying one. I love the ones I have encountered, they seem to be a little strong willed but other then that...not too bad. Also, if anyone knows a breeder with good feedback locally let me know!

Thanks!

I went camping last summer with a buddy of mine. His brother showed up with an American Bulldog. I was actually afraid of the dog for a day and a half. His name is Brutus.

I want this.

^ I like Dobers too but they're not allowed in the new complex.

because the Dober has a worse rep. then the AB. They have a list of banned breeds, bull dogs aren't on it. Pitbulls are.

My best friend owns one. He's about 95-100 lbs, a great dog but my friend sucked at training him so he jumps when you come in the door. They need to be socialized with people and especially other dogs EARLY on. Otto goes ape and goes into kill mode every time he sees another dog.

he's bulked up since this, but it's all i've got.. this is when he was picked up from the rescue place (around 85 lbs).

Yea, Teddy I have heard the same things from a few others. Only problem with them bulking them up is the joint/hip problems (Similar to Boxers like yours). BTW, hows she doing?

Well, what I meant was that he was still skinny when my buddy picked him up b/c he was previously starved.. he didn't bulk him up on purpose, it was just him being able to eat properly. A neighbor also has one, her and Cody get along great b/c she was well socialized early on.

Cody's good, he's about 60-65 lbs. at a year and 4 months. He's pretty much done growing but he should put on another 4 or 5 lbs or so. I just can't believe he went from this

to this (December/January):

From a long time ago, but it's the only front shot I could find.. he's about 45lbs or so in this one (new PC):

Bullies are awesome dogs, It's 100% a great decision as long as you get him as a puppy and have some time to hit the dog park while he's young.. unless you don't really mind him hating other dogs. Another dog worth checking out is the Presa Canario... same family, slightly bigger, but a little more laid back. I see two of them up at the dog park a lot, and they are AWESOME if you like bigger breeds. The two I met were incredibly well mannered... Cody loves to play with them, it's pretty hilarious watching the brute strength vs. agility come into play. I've got a video of them on my cell, I'll see if I can upload it somehow. They're definitely worth a look.

The boy is looking great Teddy. I'll check out that other breed you mentioned they look awesome! I feel it's probably a very expensive purchase. I'm looking to spend a max of 1600 bucks on a new pet, not to mention it's 30 bucks per month extra for plus 400 deposit.

Did you ever think to get something like a cane corso mastiff? They are pretty muscular dogs and you can get their ears and tails done too

Thanks bro. The lady who owns the two Presas I know said they were exactly $1600 each, AFAIK they range from around 1-2K.. just so ya know. Definitely take a look at Washington Post Pet Classifieds, that's where I found Cody.. just click "Pets" under the "Shopping" header at the top right. There are some Am. bullies on page 4 which is the link I threw up for ya.

Well, after much considertaion... I'm going to have to scrap the American Bulldog idea. It's just not right to have a dog that big in an apartment. So, whats the next coolest thing for a smaller dog? Boston Terrier, i've been doing research and they seem to be VERY smart,VERY trainable, great lifespan (15+), minimal barking. what do you guys think. of course, I wont be living in apartment forever but it seems like a good 3-4 year until I have enough SAVED to get the home I want TO BUY. Good news is the X will be paid off at the end of this year!

My dog is part terrier, and she is incredibly smart. She is very responsive to commands, but she is extremely high-strung.

Terriers are very energetic, which Alex eluded to. I can keep Dora calm for the most part, but when I have visitors over, I pretty much have to lock her up in a bedroom.

Well, Drew is a Hippie and I doubt he did much to give the dog a good daily run. Besides, all the breed selector things online listed it as needing VERY little excersize, and suited well for apartment life.. I have ZERO problems taking it for a long walk each day. Thanks for the input Alex. I do like to kick things.

Of course they don't need exercise, THEY NEVER STOP MOVING! I'd do some more research, though.

Medium breeds:

Australian Cattle Dog
Australian Shepherd
Bulldog
Canaan Dog
Greyhound
Bull Terrier

Those seem like cool breeds to me.

If your looking for something even smaller:

Manchester Terrier
Miniature Bull Terrier
Italian Greyhound
Whippet

Has to be short hair, that eliminates most of the ones you listed. Bulldogs aren't allowed. Italian Greyhound is too damn tiny. Whippet, not into it.. I punch it though..lol
