13Ft Boston Whaler Resto and Repower
So, any of you guys mess around with old Whalers (or any boats)? I picked up a 13 that needs some love, plan to bring her back to life. It was free from a good buddy, so if I have to put some cash in its no big deal . It also cam with a solid little trailer to haul it!!. Biggest downside so far is paint ( The boat is Barney purple, my buddies kids painted it..LOL) Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions on what size motor to run. Max hp for a 1966 Whaler is 40hp (from old standards), I'm looking for a motor under 40....Maybe a 35. It has to be short shaft. I'm not married to the idea of cable and pulley steering but would like to keep it if I can. I plan on turning it into a pond/river boat. I have already purchased a nice Minn Kota electric trolling motor for it (transom mount). I would like to be able to mount some sort of pedastal seats also if possible. Hopefully I'll have it ready for the water in a month or two! I'll try and keep an update with some pics if anyone is interested.

No upholstery, it was equipped with wodden bench seats. I may put some swivel seats in though. Do you know of a good body filler to use Steve? I was thinking Bondo Ultra-glass. Shes going to be a fishing boat for the most part so It'll be a cheap paint job.

Remove the benches, go with swivels. I would HIGHLY recommend a heavy foam and boat vinyl and make a comfy cushion. Consider making a built in cooler on the boat with a small drain down low on the outside edge of the boat. This will allow you to drain the cooler - but, have it built in to hold the beers. ![]() |

The swivel seats may not work with the console im building with integrated rod holders and maybe a battery box, I plan on making it with a steering wheel. I like the cooler idea, but may go with a baitwell instead. The boat is limited on space and bait is more important to me then a fixed cooler ( i'll just carry one). I wish it were 15', then I could do everything I want. I'll giv you guys an exact plan once I start working.

You must be a noob to fishing.... Nothing is more important then keeping your bait alive and your catch. Looks like I wont get any work done to it this weekend, with the car show and Easter at the moms on Sunday..It puts a damper on things.
